I’m determined to finally hang some art on the walls of my son’s bedroom, now that he’s been around for almost a year. I’m no art connoisseur, but I’ve really enjoyed searching Etsy and eBay for vintage pieces and items from small businesses or artists that fit together in a strangely harmonious way.

My “starter” piece was an oddball painting of a panda bear that I made in elementary school that my mom had the foresight to save. I’m planning to get it framed and hang it along with a hodgepodge of other pieces on the bare wall behind my son’s changing table. Over the last ten months or so, I’ve collected the following to go with it: a vintage “C” animal cartoon, a vintage embroidered doily (this is my most recent purchase and I’m going to reframe it since I’m not sold on the maroon mat), a bobbin frame with a liberty mat from this Etsy seller, a vintage cross stitch alphabet sampler, and a vintage turtle needlepoint (also planning to reframe this since the backside isn’t in great shape).
I’m pretty sure I’m done with the collecting part of this process now — lest the nursery walls start to groan — but there are so many incredible (and mostly one-of-a-kind) things I bookmarked along the way that still need to go to good homes. I’ve organized them below in the following categories:
Flora, Fauna, and Friendly Critters (vintage embroidered strawberries, hand-painted lady bugs, a perfect mushroom poster…)
Ceramics (hand-painted plates, frames, and a rare not-cheesy custom name sign)
Alphabet Samplers (one of my favorite vintage nursery art categories — I think these are so sweet to sprinkle in alongside more distinctly modern pieces)
Animals (a charming vintage needlepoint Noah’s ark, a gorgeous green lion, a sweet sheep in a hand-painted frame…)
Children’s Book Illustrations (vintage Beatrix potter, Winnie the Pooh, Babar the elephant…)
Miscellaneous (everything from a collection of framed vintage Valentine’s day postcards to a quintet of antique hot air balloon paintings)
And almost everything is under $100. Happy browsing!
NB: This is one of my two paid newsletters for July. Whenever I write about anything baby-related behind a paywall, I welcome paid subs to forward it along to any friend(s) who might find it especially relevant. “Made me think of you” is one of the most romantic things you can type to a friend, after all.
