When I worked as an digital editor and would take part in headline brainstorms for unpublished stories, “sticky” was a word we liked to throw around. A headline was deemed sufficiently sticky if it sounded like it would keep readers on the page for a long time, or be memorable enough to bring them back again later — the ultimate triumph.
As you know if you’ve read the inspiration behind Gumshoe’s name, stickiness is a metric that stuck with me (pun unintended 🙈), and I continue to think about it in a variety of different contexts: What are my stickiest items of clothing, the ones I’ve loved the longest or reach for the most? What shopping quests do I keep revisiting because I know the result will be worth the effort? What are the things I can’t stop thinking about, wearing, using, and recommending?
Sticky Note will explore the answers to these questions, mining my mirror selfies, shopping carts, Google search history, texts, and IRL conversations for material. This new editorial franchise will be exclusive to paying subscribers, but I’ve shared the prompts I plan to answer each month before the paywall to give everyone a sense of the format. I hope you enjoy the inaugural edition, and that you’ll consider divulging your own answers to the prompts in the comment section. I’d love to know what’s sticking for you these days, too.
