I’ve been hunting for a handful of very specific things for my apartment recently, and thought I would let you in on my Google search history. Below are six keywords that prompted a series of enjoyable internet rabbit holes, along with some of my favorite finds from the results.
“German fat lava”
You might recognize this super-textured, funky pottery style that originated in West Germany in the '60s and '70s. The vibrant, chunky, textured glazes resemble molten lava — hence the memorable name. I’ve been looking for a lamp to go in the room that Austin uses as an office, and I think something in this aesthetic lane would be just right.
“Mid century still life”
There’s a spot on the wall next to my kitchen table where I’d like to hang a cozy, slightly retro still life painting. I’m no art connoisseur, but I operate from the basic principal that whatever I’m putting up on the walls should evoke the same feelings that I want the room itself to evoke. In this case: home.
“Blenko glass”
Blenko Glass Company has been producing vibrant, colorful glassware since 1893. It’s all hand-blown, so you get some really unique shapes with a lot of character. I like collecting the vintage decanters and peppering them on shelves or on top of a bar cart (or on coffee tables, before I had a mobile toddler).
"Moroccan sabra silk pillow”
These Moroccan pillows are handmade out of cactus silk. Traditionally, they are dyed with natural vegetable dye, and then hand-loomed. The fabric has a subtle, slightly shimmery finish, and is soft enough to take a nap on but still super durable. I’ve been thinking about getting a couple to throw on my living room sofa.
“Bitossi Rimini blue”
A signature line from the Italian ceramics manufacturer Bitossi, known for rich deep blue glazes with a textured finish. I have a small Bitossi Rimini blue dish that I keep my keys in by the door, and a pair of bull-shaped bookends that we received as a wedding gift. I search this keyword frequently on eBay and Etsy just to see what’s out there — it’s one of my all-time favorites.
“Fiestaware”
I’m looking for a set of coffee mugs to finally replace the oddball collection of corporate merch and gag gift mugs I seem to have amassed over the years, and I’m leaning in this direction. Fiestaware is an iconic American dinnerware brand dates back to 1936, with a vibrant color palette and durable ceramic construction that’s well-suited for everyday use. My mom uses Fiestaware in her kitchen, so it’s very nostalgic for me. I like the idea of mixing and matching between the different colors but the trick is finding the right combination — as illustrated by the above shopping picks, which all jumped out to me for this reason.
Are there any very specific keywords you’ve been rabbit-holing down recently? I absolutely must know.

Oh, also, I’ve been eyeing “amalfi plates” or “amalfi dinnerware” or “amalfi plates made in Italy” - various combinations that get me brightly colored plates and bowls and mugs. I need something happy and bright to scare off the late year/election scaries!
long live fiestawear!! i've been hunting for a good cowhide throw rug and have yet to find one in a good price point from an ethical source
