What a great guide! Will you do another one for fall? Layering in a carry-on is so challenging for 10 days!

This is the best packing list I’ve ever read! Would love a version for autumn/winter too. Am discovering lots of lovely new (to me) designers via this Substack so thank you so much!

This is very impressive for 3 weeks! Do you do a lot of hand washing when you go away?

Yes! I washed my workout clothes (since I only brought ~3 workout outfits) and underwear a couple times on that 3 week trip -- I always bring a travel-sized bottle of Branch Basics "The Concentrate" when I'm traveling (https://branchbasics.com/products/travel-kit) so I can hand wash when necessary in the bathtub. although full disclosure I used a hotel laundry service once as well :)

Same question! I have trouble rewearing things in warm climates.

so helpful! do you usually pack any outerwear? I’ve had trouble finding the perfect piece of light outerwear for late spring/summer travel.. you know when you’re indoors somewhere they’re blasting a/c? or in transit.. a light cardigan, hoodie, windbreaker serve such different purposes.

good question! i should have clarified this -- I usually wear on the plane whatever light outerwear I want to have with me on the trip for chilly nights or heavily air conditioned environments. My go-to is a light cotton chore-style jacket like this:

harling! would LOVE recommendations for clothes you'd wear for an office job (baby's first outing in business casual)

i've gotten a lot of requests for this and definitely want to tackle at some point! i need to figure out the best way to approach since every office seems to have a slightly different dress code. maybe i should do a poll or something along those liens and identify the most common threads. pondering... !

On the topic of outdoor voices: I usually buy most of my OV stuff on Poshmark. It’s great esp if you have a style of theirs you love -- like I’m a sucker for the Athena bra! I now have them in 4 colors mostly second hand

Oh my gosh this is the list I've been searching for!!! As a notorious over-packer, I'm challenging myself to travel with just a carryon + personal item for a 13 day summer trip & hopefully reform my ways for the future.

Also love discovering new designers through your recs :)

--For hats, I've been eyeing a Tilley sunhat

--For classic tanks, Foundational Easy-Does-It Tank in black and white, and white and black, look so good (even though they've been sold out for a while!)

--For comfy shoes, I love the Birkenstock Tokios, I've also been eyeing the chicer styles of Vivobarefoot

--For sandals I've found Suicoke to be like more fashionable Tevas and very comfortable

--For cotton button downs Bourrienne Paris X are gorgeous and they often have sales for 40% off

This is amazing. With a carry on, I get stuck on liquids/toiletries. At some point, could you share how you get all of that into a backpack that fits the small liquid rule and what do you wear on the plane?

Expand full comment
Harling Ross Anton's avatar

i've never had too much trouble with the liquids thing but that could be because i really scale down when i'm traveling (and often bring mini versions of my usual products) so everything fits inside a large toiletry bag that tucks into the bottom portion of my backpack. curious to know more about where you're getting stuck here -- is it fitting everything into a single toiletry bag? or is it subsequently fitting that bag into a backpack?

In terms of what I wear on the plane, it's usually:

-A white T-shirt

-My Paula pants from Modern Citizen

-the non-cardio sneakers I wrote about above

-a light sweater or jacket

I get stuck on needing more liquids than small containers can hold if I'm gone for more than a weekend (face wash, my special shampoo, hair products, makeup, etc.) and I'm always afraid I'll have to dump something expensive at security). Plus I'm not usually organized enough to plan a scaled back beauty routine in advance and procure minis or pour into minis...probably I'm overthinking it!

Expand full comment
Harling Ross Anton's avatar

No you're def not overthinking! literally the only way I've been able pull it off has been by planning in advance and buying all those annoying little 3-ounces squeezie bottles and transferring products over if they're too big for the size limitations, but now that I have those handy it's a lot easier. just need to get over the initial transfer hump 😁

Seconding this! Which bags are we using? I was dubious before I got to the 4 pairs of shoes.. how does one fit all this? Roll clothes obvi, but still, how?

Expand full comment
Harling Ross Anton's avatar

It's really only 2 pairs of shoes that you're fitting into the roller bag because in this hypothetical you're wearing one of the pairs and the other is probably going in your backpack (or whatever additional small carry-on you're bringing)

I use "The Bigger Carry On" roller bag from Away. I roll almost everything and then fold / lay flat on top anything that's too stiff to roll (i.e. a denim skirt)
