Oversized button downs are my favorite home clothes (the best are men’s thrifted or old and no longer worn by my husband - nothing too precious.) Also house shoes! I don’t wear street shoes in my home but having something with a bit of support saves my back and keeps my feet warm - shearling lined Birkenstock clogs are my favorite for this.
Love this! I've worked fully from home for about 4 years now and so have quite a honed, albeit split, approach to dressing. My top half is clothed for Zoom (beyond depressing but such is life right now) in a rotation of linen shirts, cashmere jumpers, plain cotton tees, etc. Hair and face done, favourite earrings, easy. Below Desk though...an ever-decreasing-in-quality-collection of Free People and Abercrombie sweatpants, sometimes a Uniqlo legging if I've been to a gym class, sometimes a cotton pyjama trouser if I've given up. It's an ongoing process!
i've been having a similar conversation with myself in that i love hoodies and i feel the most myself in them so WHY do i limit myself to only owning cheap stained ones from college. let me invest in the clothes i love!!
I have found that unless I am dressing for work, I only ever feel like wearing my “home clothes” even when I’m out running errands or daytime socializing. I am doing a similar process and trying to transition my home clothes to comfortable but stylistically-aligned garments. I’m using ballet-core as inspiration - dancewear and thrifted cotton basics paired unexpectedly and styled with a lot of layering. I now think of my wardrobe in three categories - work, going out, and casual (“home clothes”), and that’s been way more functional for me and helpful when making shopping decisions.
i bravely did this recently too! why did i have 3 pairs of the ugliest sweatpants that i continuously wore? haven't quite filled the gap, so looking forward to your next post.
Wow, this post is incredibly timely and thought-provoking! I was just thinking about how I need to focus more on clothes that fit my day-to-day lifestyle...last year I bought with the goal of building up my professional wardrobe and establishing a shortlist of "going out to dinner" fits. But as much as I love to dress up, I work out of my apartment and spend most of my time at home (esp during these cold winter months).
Like you, I have a mix of WFH go-to's I love, and ones I don't. So I can't wait to apply these ideas to my own wardrobe!
And btw, my equivalent of your Entireworld sweats is an army-green pair from Outdoor Voices I bought years ago. They have aged SO well and still fit perfectly. I wish I'd bought them in more colors!
I love that you acknowledge home clothes! I’ve been trying to overhaul my versions too. I absolutely love silk mens boxers + XXL vintage cashmere sweater + socks + uggs.
Love post and also think a lot about home clothing. I wear my toogood Baker pant a lot at home. I have several pairs. I tend keep the new ones for nicer things and the old ones at home pants. They are a big of an investment and can be found on sale different places. Pay attention to the material. She makes them in a lot of different fabric. I love the cotton ones for home clothing.
One thing I struggle with is studio clothing. This inspires me to do this same kind of revamp but studio clothing.
I bought a pair of Girlfriend Collective jogger sweatpants on sale a few years ago, and even at the sale price I cringed because they're just sweatpants. But my rationality was that I have already tried discounted sweats from Marshall's for years and truly despised them so I pulled the trigger. To this day they are some of my favorite house clothes. They are still soft and cozy, they haven't shrunken at all (unlike my aforementioned Marshall's sweats), and they just feel good to wear years later. Luxe and curated house clothes is one of my forms of self care, especially since I am in these clothes more often than not.
so good! i’ve been thinking about this lately but hadn’t gotten around to figuring out the framework for selecting what to toss or keep and this helps a ton
Super timely! As I wear a sweatshirt from a brand that is super cozy but not cute. I've also been plotting on a cotton sweater so maybe now's the time.
This is brilliant- thank you for giving me the courage to confront this conundrum with my own overwhelming collection of home clothes. Feeling empowered and inspired!
Two pants I have acquired that make the home to errand jump: black Arc pants from Le Bon Shoppe and the rec trek pants from Outdoor Voices. I realized that I really want an elastic waist on home days, and these make me feel comfortable and pulled together.
I find the waist on the Arc Pants runs slightly small (or maybe, just small compared to our current sizing model which is more generous than in past decades?!) I typically wear a 29 in jeans and have found that size large in the Arc Jeans is the comfiest for me. I'm 5'4" and the regular inseam is perfectly full-length on me!

second the shearling-lined Birk clogs!
do the shearling-lined birks get super dirty?! how do we keep them clean?
hmm great question. I mostly wear mine on quick trips outside to take out the trash, grab the mail, etc. so mine have stayed relatively clean.
yes to the oversized button downs!
WOW, you send this just after I told myself yesterday that I would update my winter WFH staples! Now I guess I really have to do it.......
a particularly timely exercise in "feels like 19 degrees" kind of weather !!!
Underrated: oversized, worn-in button downs make for great home clothes (and look good on a zoom call). Xx
i feel like none of mine are worn-in enough! need to work on this
Perfect use case for thrifting!

love the idea of ballet-core as home clothes inspo
Shoutout to my L. L. Bean slippers! I have the Wicked Good Slipper Scuffs, and if I didn’t, my life would not be the same!
Me too, I'm on my second pair! So good :)

so glad this resonated! does OV still make the sweats?? (I assume not 😭)
Did some quick research and turns out they are from a 2020 St. Vincent x OV collab! But there are a few secondhand options:

ooh silk men's boxers!

I was just mulling over a post like this!
Two pants I have acquired that make the home to errand jump: black Arc pants from Le Bon Shoppe and the rec trek pants from Outdoor Voices. I realized that I really want an elastic waist on home days, and these make me feel comfortable and pulled together.
I have other stuff I love from LBS and I've been VERY curious about the Arc pants!!! Do they run true to size?
I find the waist on the Arc Pants runs slightly small (or maybe, just small compared to our current sizing model which is more generous than in past decades?!) I typically wear a 29 in jeans and have found that size large in the Arc Jeans is the comfiest for me. I'm 5'4" and the regular inseam is perfectly full-length on me!
The waist is pretty tight for the first few wears, but they break in so nicely! I bought them in November and have already worn them ten times!
Echoing the arc pants love! I wear mine at least once a week.
Love my Arc Pants - I have three colors 🥰
