Def interested in the Kyoto birks! I think they look stylish yet also kind of hippie-ish. I’m also still trying to find the perfect plaid pants a la Lizzie McGuire. Diving into thigh highs with heeled sandals 😋 and always the hi/low match up. Adore my white Labucq clogs for work ‘fits. Def bought some breezy t shirt dresses to play around with this summer.

Beaded bags à la Susan Alexandra. They were/are so cute but just not true to my personal style! Sold my cow print one after one summer of wearing it.

Do you understand the magnitude of how difficult it was to procure the Birkenstock x Jil Sander collection or Proenza Schouler? It was painful. I do think Studio Nicholson has the next best option!

I'm in love with my Clark Walllabees. I got the sand color. They remind me of the Minnetoka Moccasins I wore all of middle school! I think they look really cool and with a pair of jeans and just a white tee. They're also the most comfortable shoe ever. I think I will probably just swap out the color ever time I need a new pair just to keep things fresh.

I and my short torso regret high waisted pants.

Jo's avatar

Note: these are all things I’ve made rather than bought as I rarely buy clothes. Regrets: high waisted suiting weight wide leg pants. If I’m wearing pants it’s because I’m cold and having the wide leg makes them too cold and airy! Always wear: bike shorts! I adopted early before they became big and were still seen as dorky, but so practical for exercise, keeping cool. Great investment: yes, bikenstocks. And Dock down jacket. Haven’t adopted yet (but want to): tiered midi dress.

Function first always ♥️ I love my tokio birks because my toes are rarely fit for the public and also just nice not having aircon and garbage sweat on them.

Hmm I tried and tried to find the perfect set of jean cut offs but the long length I would require to feel comfortable does not make them practical (too hot for summer to have so much denim fabric cover my legs yet too short for cooler temps)

I regret my quilt coat. I just don’t reach for it, I think it’s a bit too twee for me.

The trend I’m debating is the Dorsey James bezel tennis necklace. Do I actually want to wear it or do I just like it because the whole internet seems to have it?

Re: the tennis necklace, I promise I'm not trying to be a shopping enabler but I do think that specific piece is a bit different from many other trends (in a good way!) in that it isn't recognizably from one brand. Dorsey has positioned themselves really well in terms of both price and messaging (and marketing - making their way into the closets of the right people), which is why you're seeing them everywhere, but if I had to guess, you don't want the necklace because it's *from* Dorsey, you want it because it's a style with timeless appeal that has been made freshly apparent thanks to a clever brand - and that's a great sign when it comes to judging how long you'd love and wear something.

The slip dress is here to stay for me! In my mind it never stopped being a great look and I’ve been thrilled to make it a regular part of my wardrobe. So versatile, it works year round in LA, dressed up or dressed down. I got one from Silk Laundry at a big markdown and I love it.

Jury is still out for me on oversized/big shoulder blazers. I feel unsure each time I put mine on. I’m petite and I think it swims on me, but I like the look on other people. I just think I prefer a tailored, more classic blazer for myself.

YES to the slip dress forever. I will never be without a slip dress in my closet, it’s the only dress trend that I feel transcends time in so many ways.

I have more pairs of Adidas than I should, but thought I still needed those Sambas. Alas, not a pair to be found in my size. So I tried a pair of Puma’s Super Liga OG soccer shoes. Same vibe, same light comfort, same colorway. Sold. My real lifetime love is loafers, and I’m glad there finally are so many styles to choose from. But they’ve all served me well over the years. My newish love, and another shoe style I’m convinced will stick, are the oxfords made by the Office of Angela Scott. You will have to rob a bank to get them, but the workmanship is unsurpassed and they do have good sales during the year.

Yes! I extremely picky when it comes to shoes. I want it to be 1) practical 2) look good with all my outfits. My favorite sneakers were the Nike Daybreaks in Black/White. Once that pair wore out, I was on the hunt again and found Onitsuku Tiger. I love that 70s track sneaker look and I feel like it's always in style but the brand that's in style changes. It keeps my look consistent and grounded but also a little trendy and fresh.

the resurgence of slingback heels has been a good one for me! I've found them super comfortable and they elevate outfits. maybe it's because the laundromat has shrunk so many of my jeans and I've gone up a size since last year, but I find the seemingly never ending shift of denim styles to be kind of exhausting, especially as well-fitting jeans are a staple in my wardrobe. It's been kind of a slog the past few years to stay on top of having one or multiple pairs that 1. fit well and 2. feel cool and on trend!

Harling, would you ever write about the proliferation of trends in whatever social media iteration we live in now? (Or have you and I’ve just missed it?) I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.

Are the trends coming at break neck speed bc everyone has access, shein/Amazon replicate things basically overnight, and there is no slow break down (the trickle-down effect explained in Devil Wears Prada). Or because I’m older and don’t live in the suburbs anymore and care about fashion, am I just noticing them sooner?

But it really does feel like things are “in” and “everywhere” and then “out” way faster than they were in the 2000s or 2010s.

The sambas to me are a great example. I wasn’t even around fellow humans for 2 years (or that’s what it felt like) and suddenly in 2022, everyone is wearing sambas.

(You’ll notice from my profile that I didn’t escape that trend, though I went for a wales Bonner collab bc I was afraid to get on the subway and feel like a cult member when I looked at everyone else’s feet. Now I’m just a novitiate)

Or the fact that when I go to Williamsburg/Greenpoint not only is every 20 something seemingly dressed the same (ok we did the same similar dressing when I was in Greenpoint in the 2010s) but they are literally wearing head to toe the same brands. Like I’ll pass multiple young women in the same hour who all seemed to click the same LTK link and purchase the entire look. And I’ve never seen trends show up on so many young people outside major cities in such a head to toe way as soon as they become a “thing”. The first irl return to school year for nyu, I remember seeing so many orientation kids who looked straight off an Instagram photo shoot (same goes for Princeton). Whereas I felt like previously it took one/a few semesters for the majority of kids to nail the current style. And even then, being broke and in college meant most of the time you get one piece at a time and it’s only by senior year that you don’t look like you’re in high school anymore.

It's something I think about a lot too! Social media has absolutely made trends surge and die faster than ever before. It's a recipe for whiplash. Thank you so much for sharing these thoughts, I love hearing other people's perceptions of this phenomenon and how it's evolving. Also love the Wales Bonner samba collab btw :)

Curious if sporty/reflective/cyberpunk sunglasses the new tiny sunglasses? I think they look cool with the right y2k referential outfit and like the thought. Just can’t see myself wearing them for very long. They’ve had decent runway appearances since 2018 but I’ve seen them around more casually this year and I’m admittedly tempted.

I second the Birkenstocks trend that has now turned into a closet staple. As a 90s kid anytime I see Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen wear something, I immediately think OMG NEED, so when I saw them many years ago photographed at an airport wearing Birkenstocks with socks, I was in. And I have stayed in after many a pair and I doubt I’ll ever be leaving lol.

Boilersuits are a recent trend that I think I’ll also stick with forever, I have a couple from Madewell and Alex Mill that I love to wear on cool rainy days with doc martens. They are so easy to make into an outfit, definitely have become a staple for me!
