I love sharing the ones I come across, but I’m also wary of the limitations of my own algorithm-driven loop. There are so many brands that fly under the radar despite the interesting things they’re doing and making — if you have any favorite(s) that you think deserve more attention, feel free to shout them out below, and tell us why!
My brand: Mollusk! Vintage inspired, beachy, flattering. I've been designing Mollusk for Mollusk Surf Shop with my husband since 2005. Painter Pants are our best selling product but the hemp tees and sweaters also rock. We've got some killer jackets on the way.
Megan Huntz! She’s an Atlanta-based designer who makes timeless, elegant things out of natural fibers. I have two silk dresses from her that I absolutely love. https://www.meganhuntz.com/
Oh, all of them! 😄😆 I wear the white Honcho clog constantly - it’s a near-daily shoe. The Perf-Hi style used to be a daily shoe for me. And the Carlton and Rachel boots really pull an outfit together. Then there are lots of nice sandals for events! I’ve been wearing the 1-800 Heel to weddings lately too.
Thanks for all your work, Harling - I always enjoy and learn from your writings 😊
This isn’t a clothing brand but I love studio ford. I have this tablecloth from them and their stuff is so pretty. Maybe someday I’ll turn it into a dress. Don’t tell my husband how much it cost… https://studio-ford.com/products/otti-tablecloth
My home decor brand lazy jamie (https://lazyjamie.com/) which you were so lovely to previously feature. We specialize in affordable, high-design stainless steel tableware.
i ride so hard for Paynter! Incredible jacket co owned by an impressionable couple in London. I own 3 jackets, their Bill’s Blue chore jacket is one of the best pieces of clothing I’ve purchased. They also had a run making these white tees that I live in. I think they truly exemplify sustainable clothing and I feel like more people should know about them. Even if it means that it will be difficult to pre-order one https://paynter.co.uk/
I just started a brand called Mairin https://shopmairin.com/ I focus on wool basics for the outdoors. My best seller is a rolled neck, hand-knit sweater but I also make baselayers with merino grown regeneratively in the American West. I use 100% wool and they are either undyed or naturally dyed. I have much more to come and am excited to share it with you all! Here's more about my sweater https://mairinwilson.substack.com/p/the-sweater
Also I really like Elizabeth Suzann. I think her designs are very thoughtful and well-made. I used to shop a lot of sustainable brands and I often thought the design quality wasn’t great but she has put a lot of attention into how her clothes fit and she’s very focused on size inclusivity:
I feel J. Hannah is often overlooked as a small business and it’s run by a very tiny number of people (2-3 full time?). The quality is unmatched. The weight of the jewelry alone feels monumental - it’s much more dense than all of my other pieces of jewelry. I also have a custom engagement ring from JH / Ceremony that I love so dearly. The customization factor is what sold me. All is customizable there and you’re getting a proper heirloom piece. The dream.
Cygnet Living for children's clothing gifts. I like to shop around for most gifts, but I always get my best friends something from Cygnet after they have their baby. Definitely leans preppy, but I dare you to find a new mom who doesn't melt with their babies in these!
Yeah! Those are new to her collections, but she really tests everything and puts a lot of attention and intention into each piece. Highly recommend following her as she lets people in on the process and shows pieces before they launch. I just ordered today the new Repeat shirt as I am 35 weeks pregnant so I’m trying to only purchase items that can go beyond pregnancy. I own a lot of her pieces so happy to share thoughts on anything and she is also very responsive and connects with her customers in an authentic way.
This is soooo niche, but since the timing is apt, sharing @gabriellamoxey.artist on Instagram who makes custom painted wooden wreaths. I had an absolute ball creating mine last fall and actually hang it on the interior of our front door as a farewell to guests -- and so I can admire it. Will think of more!
If you’re a plant person who loves design, check out lbedesign.com :) we make heirloom quality ceramic planters that fit grow pots for easy maintenance! Colors and silhouettes are inspired by the best of mid-century design.
Some other small brands I adore:
House of Good Candles (amazing scents, non toxic, run by two fabulous women in CT)
Stryker Made (she hand dyes old vintage pieces or upcycles pieces with hand stitched details)
Streicher Ceramics (he makes amazing lamps in fun shapes and bold patterns)
Ozma of California (gorgeous west coast clothing company)
Wax Atelier (incredible beeswax candles from the UK. Gorgeous color palette)
If anyone is interested in more ceramics, Peter Sheldon, Tracie Hervy, DBO Home are all incredible!
And Ronni Nicole has stunning floral artwork (she’s working in plaster now, but has gorgeous painted paper reliefs too)
Love this shout out section so much! What a great idea :)
I second the recommendation for Studio Ford. Stumbled across the gorgeous quilts via Salter House. Also recommend Autumn Sonata for table linens and towels—I think she’s getting traction now. And I love Leigh Miller jewelry!
I have an indigo cotton one, but the azure linen is very similar! She has paused the indigo fabric dyeing as she had a baby recently ☺️ but it might come back perhaps x
This is my brand, I’ve launched it last year before having my first baby.
Our bestsellers are the Huggies, we sell them with a few different semi-precious stones. I’m also launching a very exciting new Collection in a few weeks!! Hope you cam check it out:
Hi! I’d love to introduce you to arkitaip (https://arkitaip.com/), the women’s linen wear brand I co-founded with my mum. Our collection focuses on interesting yet wearable silhouettes, all designed with the intention in mind to stand the test of time. Made in Portugal, each piece is created from fully traceable, sustainably sourced European linen. Would love to hear your thoughts :) x Lea
My brand: Eileen Pappas Jewelry! Inspired by my Nature and Greece, my two greatest loves, it's zero-waste, handcrafted artisanal jewelry and objets with soul. Feel free to check it out here: https://www.eileenpappas.com/shop
It is a very small slow fashion brand with a collection of beautiful sustainable, versatile and timeless items, made with recycled and organic cotton/wool and dyed through natural ancient dyeing methods (you can see the whole process on their website as well, very cool).
I have their Kenna sweater, really the softest sweater I ever had, their Bièl pants and Bièl shorts. And they just launched new colorways of the sweater and pants, in red (very much into red lately), so will save some money to get my hands on those! https://www.floria-collective.com/
I love BaredFootwear for shoes. The are an australian shoe brand. They are next level comfortable, as they are developed by foot people, and super stylish. The brand is growing as I think they just launched a shoe store in NY. I have the Nightingale Boots and have worn them for 2 year now, nearly every day to work. And they look good as new. They are just about to drop there summer collection and I cannot wait!
I recently launched a brand with my mother, we design 100% organic Italian cotton whit shirting for women with unique details, and thoughtful tailoring without the markup pricing! Designed in Italy and Denmark, and produced in Portugal ! Our best sellers so far are The Lief and the Nova :)
Artemis Design Co. (a favorite client!)--they make shoes and accessories from vintage Turkish kilims & rugs, so each piece is completely one-of-a-kind. My favorites are the Smoking Shoes and Baby Duffles.
My brand! Jorja thejorja.com. We're new on the scene. We make high quality nylon bags that are designed to blend style, functionality, and exceptional craftsmanship. All bags are designed in Brooklyn and made in Tuscany!
Each bag embodies simplicity, sophistication, and the art of multitasking.
My favorite piece of customer feedback we've gotten to date: “Think The Row but at a better price point.”
We have timeless silhouettes that are reminiscent of designer bags but operate like really big gym bags. In other words, we've combined the aesthetics of a luxury brand with the functionality of a gym bag.
My brand: Mollusk! Vintage inspired, beachy, flattering. I've been designing Mollusk for Mollusk Surf Shop with my husband since 2005. Painter Pants are our best selling product but the hemp tees and sweaters also rock. We've got some killer jackets on the way.
